Squid & AntiSquid

Thursday, August 6, 2009

general specifics.

Portland in August is a beautiful place. Decidedly more so than last week. The heinous record-breaking heatwave that rendered three quarters of my wardrobe & an equal proportion of daylight hours useless has itself broken. The skies are cloudy, the sleeves are long, and I feel at home for the first time in recent memory. I even have a job interview next week.
In the meantime I'm organizing an international Naked Mail swap for an SFZero task. There are a lot of players involved, which creates a high risk of dropouts & no sends, but if all goes well it shall be a truly epic completion.

Dear Etsy shop, you no longer reflect my abilities. It's my fault too, let's work on it.

Here are some of the pieces I ended up submitting with my PNCA application:

This is Vampyroteuthis Infernalis, which approximately means Vampire Squid from Hell. Pure awesome.
The Adventures of Beargirl Installment 3. It's not quite finished.
This might be my favorite portfolio piece. I've always had a thing about taking pictures of & sketching my feet. Perhaps the desire for an impending journey

On a side note, I was accepted to the intermedia BFA program. Now I just have to pay for it.

Naked Mail Banana

My friend Dez is momentarily out of the world working on her yoga teaching certification. She's sequestered here for three months with a 5:30 wake up call, limited telephone access, & a lack of my nonsense . Obviously, it's time for naked mail.
For the first month she was away, I waited for the right object. It had to be intriguing but inexpensive, in case it didn't make it through. It also needed enough surface area to write at least an address & (of course) it had to be write-on-able. Then one day, in a moment of perfect revelation, I came across a box full of fake food at the dollar store. Plastic bananas are good stuff.
One thing I was decidedly unsure about was how much postage a banana needs. I think I ended up using about $2.10 even though it was a light banana. I figured that a banana without packaging & no return address would have enough trouble on it's way through the post without the possibility of underpaying for it's ride.
Apparently, banana mail is takes around the same time as regular mail. It arrived two or three days after I sent it with no noticable dents or difficulty.
One concern I had was that the address might rub off as the banana went through the mail. For a longer distance mailing I'd probably use some kind of sealant over the writing.

Long day full of things that haven't happened yet.

I've been a lazypants with the Zombie History updates. But now that March is over there's a bit of wrapping up to be done. I received word not to long ago that the SRZH had placed a few signs around Marysville. SRZH signs were sited on both "Welcome to Marysville" signs as well as on the board showcasing the towns clubs & organizations.
There was also an article in The Prospector that helped proliferate the truth of Marysville's hidden zombie history.
The project made some progress for zombie history, but there's still a lot to be done before the town recognizes the truth.

Second Information Center & Greeting Card Production

Today's update will be mostly pictorial, since all the zombie related happenings have made me markedly sleepy, but I really wanted to post a little zombie tidbit.
Another Zombie History Information Center opened on Tuesday and the first edition of greeting cards is ready to be distributed. I positioned a promotional pre-release card at the first information center, hoping that it would be found by Ms. Godiva, which evidently has come to pass.
At this, I'd like to blather a bit about the card production, because I spent a lot of time on it. Feel free to talk amongst yourselves, imagined readership.
I originally intended to use some random zombie clip art for the cardfronts and I still may in the next set. But I complained about not being able to find anything I thought was suitable & naturally my mate challenged me to draw something for myself. I figured my ass would have to be pretty lazy indeed if I couldn't cobble together a semi-decent line drawing. The result was a scraggly looking zombie girl in her pajamas. It's a little hard to see, but she's licking her eyeball.
I wanted the card to have at least a hint of "maybe this wasn't made in 30 minutes on someone's laptop" so (lacking a decent image editor) I filled a few areas with paint and added some text. The entire card reads "Feel like a zombie in the morning? Maybe you're related to one. Happy Zombie History Month."
Is a half-dressed girl with exposed ribs too provocative?Hard to say.
The cards will be in stores by Saturday and there should be a couple more information centers up by then as well. A library ready edition of The Lab Notes of Aloisia Ornt is in production as are some further zombie information etc.s.
